We are looking for artists to take part in our pop-up gallery project in Gt Yarmouth, which will showcase exciting contemporary visual art by emerging rural artists in the East Anglian region. In this exhibition Pop-Up Slop we will present the work of local artists who challenge the idealised untouched landscapes and chocolate box depictions dominating art scenes in rural areas. We’re looking for original, exciting and honest artwork (including but not limited to: painting, collage, sculpture, video, audio, installation) that has some connection to the countryside, be it the material, theme or artist. We think that representations of rural life in contemporary art are monopolised by the privileged- we’re bored of this and want to promote fresh ideas/depictions/experiences that reflect your rural realities. The exhibition will be held in central Gt Yarmouth, which has good transport links to the surrounding countryside. This is to share innovative contemporary art outside of big cities, making it more accessible to those who may struggle with access to transport and viewing opportunities. This is a paid opportunity for the artists, thanks to our wonderful funders the East Anglian Art Fund and Norfolk County Council. It will take place in Feb 2021, and alongside exhibiting your work we would like to publish an interview about your practice (either a filmed discussion, written piece, or audio depending on what the artist is comfortable with doing- we are open to discussion on this). We want to give artists the best space and opportunity to showcase their work, so expect either several works, or something large scale. We also encourage BAME artists to apply to this opportunity; platforming the voices of underrepresented people, including artists of colour from rural areas is especially important to us as theirs are voices that are often the least heard.
